Weekend Projects: Resurface a Fireplace with Stucco

Tools and Materials:

stucco mix (concrete and sand) concrete bonding agent straight, steel trowel notched trowel bristle brush trowel with sponge attached

Steps:

1. Brush the concrete bonding agent onto the bricks, this will help the stucco adhere to the brick. Allow it to dry at least 30 minutes.

2. Either purchase ready-made stucco, or mix concrete and sand together to make your own. Add a little of the bonding agent to the mix so it will dry quicker and stick better. It should have a toothpaste-like consistency.

3. With a notched trowel, run a series of grooves in the first coat of stucco. This will help the second coat to adhere better.

4. Use a straight, steel trowel to apply the second coat of stucco. The straight trowel will give you a modern, sleek look. For a rustic texture, run a bristle brush over the concrete. To get a smooth finish with just a little bit of subtle texture, use a trowel with a sponge attached.
